The RTL English Curriculum is comprised of 15 learning levels. These levels offer a total of 600 student workbooks, 4000 worksheets and 12,500 teaching notes that you can use to teach your child from 3 to 18 years old. Each level offers up to 36 lessons (& weeks) of teaching. You can teach the lessons as fast or slow as you like.

Level 10 : Learning Overview

LEVEL 10 – Upper Intermediate Stage
Suitable for children aged 12 to 13 years old
Objectives of this level:

  • Difficult Words – Presentation Skills – Story Writing – Comprehension
  • Prepare students for Cambridge University & Trinity College London Exams

 

Description:
Students are taught self expression. They will learn to write formally, descriptively guided & ‘open-ended’. The Student will read fiction, read for information and read instructions. They will discuss 16 different topics and make individual presentations. They will also continue to develop their grammar knowledge, practise their pronunciation and develop their knowledge of poetry.

Preparation for Cambridge University’s First Certificate of English (FCE) & Trinity Spoken tests
Level 10 prepares students for the Cambridge University’s First Certificate of English (FCE) & Trinity Spoken tests. FCE is for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level.

CAMBRIDGE FCE TEST

  • Cambridge vocabulary – ‘Learning’ Activities – Writing Practise – Quiz lessons – Revision lessons

 

TRINITY COLLEGE SPOKEN

  • Initial Stage :: G4 to G6 – Trinity GESE vocabulary – Quiz lessons – Revision lessons

 

Learning Overview:

  • Students will be taught to include more difficult words and phrases in their presentation of topics and ideas.
  • Fluency and confidence increase by initiating, maintaining and concluding a discourse.
  • They will converse with spontaneity, explain and express personal views, as well as demonstrate a range of language techniques.
  • Grammar exercises, written answers to open ended questions and close passages are practised.
  • Reading and comprehending the text are extensively taught.
  • Writing skills are practised in Story Writing exercises.

Speaking Goals:

  • Gain and maintain the interest and response
    of different audiences.
  • Evaluate their own speech and others and to reflect on how it varies.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on various content areas, including a purpose, point of view, introduction, coherent transition and appropriate conclusion.
  • Engage the audience with appropriate verbal cues, facial expressions and gestures.

Listening Goals:

  • Reflect on language choices to create and express their thoughts, ideas and feelings.
  • Set aside own point of view when listening to allow the speakers intent and meaning to be stated.
  • Listen to recorded voices on CD (a much more difficult task than that requires practice).
  • Listen to new information on 16 new topics, form opinions.
  • Present an argument – make a speech – debate set subjects .
  • Listen to phonic blends to improve pronunciation and spelling.

Writing Goals:

  • Dictionary work – giving information – asking for information – keeping a diary – writing to a pen friend – writing a recipe, a letter of complaint, an invitation, a notice, an advertisement – a short story.

Grammar Goals:

  • Reported speech – antonyms – synonyms – positive and negative statements – contractions – cloze passages – question tags.

Reading Goals:

  • Demonstrate an understanding that an authors’ purpose is part of the meaning-making process
  • Examine the relationship between reader and writer.
  • Read and follow the instructions of each page.
  • Read and understand the information on the topic pages.
  • Read and forecast events in the Story and answer the comprehension questions.
  • New words: pronunciation – explanation – definitions re: context.
