The RTL English Curriculum is comprised of 15 learning levels. These levels offer a total of 600 student workbooks, 4000 worksheets and 12,500 teaching notes that you can use to teach your child from 3 to 18 years old. Each level offers up to 36 lessons (& weeks) of teaching. You can teach the lessons as fast or slow as you like.

Level 12 : Learning Overview

LEVEL 12 – Upper Intermediate Stage
Suitable for children aged 14 to 15 years old
Objectives of this level:

  • Difficult Words – Presentation Skills – Story Writing – Comprehension
  • Prepare students for Cambridge & Trinity Exams

Course Description:
The Student will be taught to choose vocabulary specific to the topic, summarise ideas and information. The student will be expected to demonstrate the ability to use correct written and oral grammar. Grammar work concentrates on phrasal verbs, revises idioms and introduces proverbs. Authentic stories will be analysed and discussed. Science fiction stories generate discussion and descriptive language. The students are taught to recognise metaphors and discuss environmental issues.

Preparation for Cambridge University’s First Certificate of English (FCE) & Trinity Spoken tests
Level 12 prepares students for the Cambridge University’s First Certificate of English (FCE) & Trinity Spoken tests. FCE is for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level.


CAMBRIDGE FCE TEST

  • Cambridge vocabulary – ‘Learning’ Activities – Writing Practise – Quiz lessons – Revision lessons

TRINITY COLLEGE SPOKEN

  • Initial Stage :: G4 to G6 – Trinity GESE vocabulary – Quiz lessons – Revision lessons.

Speaking Goals:

  • The topics are factual, therefore factual questions and answers must be learnt and offered.
  • The topics have specific vocabulary that must be learnt and used correctly.
  • Discuss the topics are discussed as a group and the students encouraged to ask questions of each other.
  • The material must be learnt and presented to the group.
  • There is a marked increase of oral confidence because of new topics and new information.

Listening Goals:

  • The topics are factual, many about famous people and or events.
  • The issues and events are real and the students must be prepared to give correct answers with factual information.
  • There are 16 new topics to discuss, debate and present.
  • Again the student will be asked listen to recorded voices on CD (a much more difficult task than that requires practice) and to give their own opinion.
  • Phrasal verbs make conversation more interesting and it is necessary that they are heard and used correctly.

Writing Goals:

  • The topics are all factual and therefore the writing tasks are factual too.
  • The students are shown how to reason, understand the problem and find a solution.
  • To write a story they need to answer a question, discuss it and write about it.
  • There are also exercises to write an agreement or disagreement and to support both with a point of view.

Grammar Goals:

  • This concentrates on the use and understanding of phrasal verbs and more complex similar words with different meaning.

Reading Goals:

  • Read and follow the instructions of each page.
  • Read and understand the information on the topic pages.
  • Read and forecast events in the Story and answer the comprehension questions.
  • The story has many twists and turns, with the plot becoming more complicated. The language is more sophisticated with more words to one page.
  • Time is given for group discussion and analysis of the characters and the situation.
  • New words: pronunciation – explanation – definitions re: context.
  • Phonics: exploring the sounds of aw, ance, ence, ive, ou, iou, or etc.
